We’ve all heard this well-meant advise repeatedly: Just follow your passion!
Have you ever been frustrated when someone tells you to follow your passion? Sure, you’d love to, if only you knew what your passion was…
Some people are lucky enough to know exactly what they want in life and love what they do, because they followed their passion. Others, on the other hand, struggle to know what their true passion is and choose one path only to find out they hate the direction they are going in.
How exactly do you follow your heart and live your passion? If you feel stuck, here are our TOP 10 WAYS to discover what your true passion is. Take some time with this and know, no matter what, you will be getting closer to where you want to be.
#1 Start with the Right Perspective
If you go out to eat with the strong opinion that you are not hungry, there will be nothing on the menu you want to eat. You won’t even explore it or give it enough attention. It is very unlikely that you find something to eat that you will enjoy. The same applies to finding your passion. If you are convinced that your passion is hard to find and you close yourself off to the possibility of finding your passion, you block all those signals that will guide you. However, if you decide to adopt the perspective that you CAN find your passion in life, those little pulls and nudges will magically appear.
#2 Get Out Your Metal Detector
Now that you decided that your will find your passion, it’s time to look for evidence of things that you already love. If you scan your life, you’ll notice certain experiences pop up as peak experiences. Delve into those peak moments and extract the key ingredients that made it so positive and memorable. Think of yourself as a gold digger who is trying to decide whether you found gold or cheap metal. For example, if you go back to your favorite summer job. Maybe it was being a camp counselor. Did you love it because you enjoyed being surrounded by kids or did you love it because you were in charge and leading a group? Make a list of the ingredients that truly mattered and use your ‘metal detector’ to find the counterfeits.
#3 Be Realistic
In this process of exploration you might fall head over heals in love with an activity. Something that completely engrosses you, lights you up and makes your heart sing. Now it’s time to ask yourself the question: Who would benefit from this and pay for it? If you want your passion to contribute to society and at the same time make you an income, you need to get realistic. Could this passion of yours turn into a profitable career and what do you need to do to make it happen. Even more importantly, if you turn your passion into a career, would you still love doing those things or would it turn into things that you have to do. Be very aware who might be interested in your newly found passion and have conversations with those people to get a clear picture of how, where and when your passion would serve them and if those circumstances will add or subtract from your passion.
#4 Expect Mutiny
When you are on the path to finding your passion, there will be a part of you that goes into rebellion. There might even be parts of this blog that provoke some resistance in you. We all have our fears about failure, success, vulnerability, visibility… If you listen to your fears that instruct you that you can’t do what you love to do, your passion will remain out of your reach. Instead of letting those fears win, uncover years of conditioning from your family, peers, teachers, preachers, partners, co-workers and society and reassure those parts of you that are mutinying that you are going in the right direction and tune out those negative voices – from inside yourself and the people around you.
#5 Follow Your Curiosity
You may not have a clear vision about your passion, yet, but you are probably curious about things. This may not even be obvious to you, but follow your curiosity and uncover interests that are not on your radar just yet. If you tap into those interests you will find your unique motivation that sets you apart from others. It is important to pursue them to start finding out who you are and what your creativity is. Ask yourself, what would you do if you won the mega millions? You might be surprised to find what you are interested in doing if money wasn’t a concern.
#6 Surround Yourself with Supportive People
How many of your family and friends are actually following their passion? If the answer is ‘not many’, it may be time to rethink your circle and associate with people who are inspired and live their passion. It is important to surround yourself with people who support and inspire you rather than put your quest for living your passion down. Having the support of friends can make you feel less alone and make you much braver in the pursuit of your passion.
#7 Find Mentors
When you are trying to pursue your passion, make sure you network and find mentors that can help you in the process. Identify the people in your network and beyond who successfully found and followed their passion and find out how living their passion has improved their live and how they found their passion. Now, don’t just follow your mentor blindly, everybody has their own passions and ideas, but especially once you identified a potential passion it is important to get all the information about it from someone who is pursuing this passion. Get all the facts about it to figure out whether you would still love doing what you decided to do if you have to do it on a daily basis or if it is just a fairytale that sounds good right now.
#8 Own Your Uniqueness
You are here for a reason. We all have our unique blend of wisdom, talents, skills, strengths and creativity that no-one else has. We all have something extraordinary to offer to the world. Learning to accept and own your uniqueness is a crucial step towards living your passion and sharing your gifts with the world.
#9 Be Patient
Like with everything that is worth pursuing, it is inevitable that you will encounter struggles and obstacles. Don’t let those challenges discourage you. Remember #1? You decided that it will be possible to find your passion, so be patient and don’t let road blocks stop you from your quest. It probably won’t happen over night, but you will find your passion and if you persevere, you will be rewarded in the end.
#10 Find the Limits of Your Bravery
In our personal journeys, we leaped into new adventures and believed the net will appear. Whether that was moving across the ocean or starting a Naked Yoga studio. We noticed that we couldn’t fully embrace the new until we said good-bye to the old. And with that, we made our announcement to the universe: We are serious about this. We are available. Some people may call this brave (others may think it is stupid), but we are simply 100% committed to our happiness and freedom. Embrace bold moves into a new direction instead of being comfortable with the status quo. Find your own version of bravery and discover what risks you are willing to take on the path to finding your passion. Magic happens when you are a little scared, but you don’t want to end up in a state of constant fear. Maybe you need to expand your comfort zone first, instead of leaving it completely right away.
The world needs your passion! Decide it is possible to find your passion and use our guide to gain clarity. What we’ve outlined takes some work, but it will be the best investment you’ve ever made. Follow your passion and you will be incredibly fulfilled and truly happy.
