NEVER QUIT – PERSIST

A lot of us are great at setting goals, but not all of us are great at actually achieving them and one of the biggest hurdles on our way to success is lack of motivation and persistence.

We start out with an abundance of enthusiasm, excitement and optimism and aren’t fully mentally prepared for the obstacles and challenges that will inevitably come our way.

Whether we are talking about business goals, relationship goals, financial goals, fitness goals, weight loss goals or really any other kind of goal, motivation fades when things get tough and we have to remind ourselves to recharge our batteries and keep going, because if we quit now, the hard work and struggle will all have been for nothing.

Of course we can get discouraged or de-motivated along the way, it happens to every goal-oriented and ambitious person at one point or another, but if we can learn effective strategies that will help us to keep moving forward anyway we will celebrate our well-deserved victory sooner rather than later.

Here are our TOP 10 ways to persist and never quit.

#1 Be Energy-Efficient
Most people believe that being persistent means that we work 24/7 on achieving our goals and dreams, but in reality it is one of the quickest ways to burn out and give up. It is important to remember that we are human and need to take the time to re-energize ourselves to produce the desired results. Persistence takes a lot of energy, so we need to find ways to keep refilling our physical as well as mental energy to stay focused, make smart decisions, be creative, stay committed and develop the willpower to stay on track. Take care of your body by exercising regularly, watching your nutrition and getting enough sleep and take care of your mind by feeding it with positivity, meditating, taking days off and eliminating distractions as much as you can.

#2 Learn to Handle Negative Emotions
Whether we like it or not, when things get tough and we have to deal with setbacks, failure or difficulty, negative emotions, stress and anxiety can creep in and prevent us from being persistent. Learn to find ways to chill out and find the humor in everything, because it is much more productive to laugh things off instead of getting lost of anger and hurt. Be more playful and don’t take everything so seriously, find joy in everything you do and remember that bad things can happen to the best of us. To deal with negative emotions, learn how to develop a positive mindset, become more optimistic and remember that the sun will come up again tomorrow.

#3 Develop a Burning Desire
If you really want something you will always find a way. But if you don’t have that burning desire, you will always find an excuse to quit. To build your persistence muscle you have to want something really bad and have that burning desire to achieve your goals, never looking for a way out or an excuse. There will be failures, there will be times when it seems like you aren’t making any progress, usually right before you have a major breakthrough. A powerful, burning desire will give you the inner intensity, strength and energy to keep going, even when times get tough.

#4 Have a Vision Bigger Than Yourself
The key to persistence is to have a vision and purpose that is bigger than yourself, otherwise you will quit at the first sign of difficulty. If you are looking to achieve something that has a purpose greater than yourself, the accountability pressure will push you so much further than when your purpose is self-centered. Just think about it, if you simply want to learn a new language because you think it is cool, you will give up quickly, but if you learn a new language because your partner is from a different country and your relationship is on the line, you will be more likely to persist. Shift your goal to a bigger purpose that positively affects those around you and you will focus on what you will get out of achieving your goal rather than how hard it is to get there.

#5 Believe in Yourself
Talent, skill and knowledge will only get you so far, but if you don’t believe in yourself, the odds are stacked against you and it will be a lot harder to keep going when things get tough. We’ve all seen people with less skills, talent or knowledge achieve more than talented people, because they believe in themselves and have a willingness to keep going. If you combine self-believe with talent you become unstoppable and it is very likely that you will be able to achieve the impossible.

#6 Build on Your Successes
To build momentum and stay persistent it is important to celebrate your successes along the way. It will help you to feel good about yourself, remind you that you can achieve success and keep going no matter what. Don’t underestimate the power of celebrating even the smallest victory. Most people never see the good in themselves, which makes them want to give up at the first sign of difficulty, however, if you actively seek out success and celebrate it on a regular basis, you will become unstoppable.

#7 Break Through the Wall
We’ve all ‘hit the wall’ before when we are trying to achieve something, but rather than letting the wall stop us, be aware that those walls exist, arm yourself, change your attitude and break through the wall. Develop a willingness to keep going no matter what obstacle comes your way, because transforming the impossible into the possible is just around the corner, you just can’t see it, yet. Redefine what you think is possible and break down one wall at a time. Nothing is impossible, you just need to find a way through.

#8 Build a Support Team
Any top performer in the world has a support team around them to keep them persistent and motivated whether that’s a personal assistant, a mentor, a coach, or an accountability partner. And don’t just surround yourself with people who love and support you, look for people who have already achieved what you are looking to achieve because you will speed up your learning curve and it has a hugely positive effect on your resilience and persistence levels. Sure you can achieve your goals alone, but if you want to go far, you need to build a team that helps you get there.

#9 Develop Discipline and Habits
We all know that motivation is what gets us started, but to be persistent and keep going we need to develop discipline and habits that get us there. It is very difficult to consistently keep our motivation high, especially when it seems like we are not making any progress and times are difficult, but if you have developed the self-discipline and habits that will help you to continue to go down your chosen path, you will reach your goals. Know that the results of your hard work and effort may not be seen immediately, but believe that everything you do today will add up to your desired outcome in the end.

#10 Adapt and Adjust
If you want to stay persistent you have to be able to adapt and adjust to changed circumstances because no matter how well planned out your actions are, nothing ever works out 100% according to plan. Know that the path to your goal is a series of detours, dead ends and adjustments. Keep the faith that you will be able to reach your final destination and learn to quickly adjust to whatever comes your way. If something is not working out, try it in a different way, adapt to a new idea and find a new direction that will get you to your ultimate goal.

One of the distinguishing factors of people who succeed in life and those who don’t is persistence. While we can all agree that it is fairly easy to keep going when things flow and we see progress, it can get challenging when we have to deal with major setbacks or missing proof that we are actually moving closer to our goals. Learn to persist and keep going long after most people have given up.
